The Villa of Diomedes Project

Among the very first buildings excavated in Pompeii between 1771 and 1775, the Villa of Diomedes was one of the most described and depicted monuments by the Grand Tour travellers. Since 2012, a multidisciplinary programme has aimed to reconstruct its entire evolution, from the material construction of a Roman villa to its contemporary imaginary representation. The project involved identifying and modelling the different building phases that punctuated the life of the building until the eruption of Vesuvius in 79, as well as the successive restorations that transformed it from the late 18th century to the present day.

The “Villa di Diomede” programme was launched in 2012 with the support of the Inria-Microsoft Research Joint Research Centre and then developed in 2013 within the framework of a PEPS CNRS – Paris Sciences Lettres (PSL*) and the structuring programme “Pompei 3D” (PSL) with the support of the Parco Archéologico di Pompei. In 2015, it became part of the ANR RECAP programme, completed in 2019 (RECAP: Rebuilding after an earthquake: Ancient experiences and innovations in Pompeii).
